Juneau, Alaska (KINY) – HUB Dustin Morris, Statewide Area Director American Foundation for Suicide Prevention-Alaska talks about taking good care of mental health through the holiday season during a Public Health Meeting Wednesday.
Morris acknowledged that the vacations can bring up conflicting emotions for people coping with grief and other mental health struggles.
“It’s okay to feel each love and loss over the vacations. A present you possibly can give yourself this yr is allowing emotion, emotional space to your feelings whatever they might be. Appreciate what you’ve got this holiday while also feeling deep sadness for what has been lost. You may experience each love towards those not present while missing their presence terribly. It’s okay to not be okay this holiday season.”
He also addressed feeling pressure to take part in holidays, and stressed to do what’s best for yourself.
“Do not be afraid to ask for what you would like, even when it means departing from usual traditions or skipping them altogether this yr. List those around you to assist perform the traditions you wish to keep, equivalent to asking others to assist together with your mental health preparation, or your plans. When you are estranged from family, stay connected to your loved ones of alternative, people who support you and help you express yourself authentically.”
Morris also suggested that setting small goals of self care, like reading five pages of a book, occurring a brief walk and other activities can provide a sense of accomplishment without becoming too overwhelmed.
Morris said support is on the market over the vacations, and it’s time as any to achieve out to a mental health skilled.
“The vacations are a wonderful time to explore joining a support group. Lots of them are online now. You may reach them by calling or texting 988 or using the chat feature at 988lifeline.org. You too can call the Alaska Careline at 1-877-266-4357.”
